It seems confusing, predictions, prophecies ... prophets, psychics ...
Who do you believe? What's the difference?
We all know that you can turn the television on any time of day and see advertisements concerning psychic readings. What is this psychic craze all about? Are these people of God? Are these prophetic voices that we should listen to that reveal to us the future? Thousands upon thousands call the psychic hotlines wondering about their future. Will I ever get married? Will I come into riches? Who, what, where, and when seem to be the questions that are keeping the psychics in business.
What really is unfortunate is that many Christians are unsure what to make of this psychic phenomenon. Many Christians have called psychics themselves desiring to know the unknown. The question to answer is, "What does God have to say about psychics?" When we answer this question, we can then determine what is prophetic and what is psychic.
According to Webster's dictionary, a psychic is a spiritualistic medium or a person supposedly sensitive to forces beyond the physical world. When defining a medium, we find out that it is a person through whom communications are supposedly sent to the living from spirits of the dead. Today, we do not see many persons posing as mediums, communicating with the dead on television. What we see are people who are supposedly familiar with your life. They can read into your life because of some avenue of familiarity. Of course there are some false psychics. I want to talk about the real psychics. What does God say?
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses writes:
There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord … (Deut. 18:10-12)
Is there anything wrong with reading your horoscope?

To God, this practice of consulting familiar spirits or participating in methods involving divination is an abomination unto Him. THIS IS SIN! Webster defines divination as the act or practice of trying to foretell the future or the unknown by occult means. This would include magic, tarot cards, Ouija boards, palm reading, divining rods, and anything associated to these, including reading your horoscope. That's right, reading the horoscope is a sin! Participating in these activities shows God that you are putting you trust in things other than God.
The psychic or fortune teller who consults familiar spirits are actually consulting spirits of darkness, or in other words, demon spirits. The use of Ouija boards, tarot cards, etc., are vehicles that help conjure demon spirits. These demonic spirits are familiar with your life whether you are a Christian or not. I firmly believe that there are demon spirits that are assigned to communities, families and even individuals. Whether these spirits have an influence on us or not is another issue. With these spirits being assigned and sometimes having close contact, when consulted with, they are able to comment on your past and present situations. The powers of darkness do not know your future. They may guess at your future based on behavioral patterns and what they may try to cause things to happen.
Only God knows your future. He may and reveal to us and others at times, things to come according to His will. In the book of Acts, God revealed to Ananias that Saul (Paul) was a chosen vessel unto the Lord, to bear the His name before the Gentiles, kings and children of Israel. Not only that, but how Saul how must suffer for the Lord's sake. This was a glimpse of Paul's future revealed to Ananias by God. Ananias did not consult spirits of the dead, nor look into a crystal ball. God revealed a piece of Paul's future to Ananias..
Please understand. God does not want His children seeking psychics, mediums or palm readers. Doing this for fun or in ignorance is a sin that opens the door to demonic oppression. God desires for us to seek Him concerning our future. Consider the following passages:
Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and shew you great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Jeremiah 33:3
Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. John 16:13
Can psychics speak the truth?
Before we answer this question, let's examine the following passage:
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.
The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show us the way of salvation.
And this she did many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers.
Acts 16:16-19
The woman mentioned here was a fortuneteller. Notice that the passage indicates that the woman was possessed or had a spirit of divination. Paul's response to the truth that she told after many days indicates that just being correct does not mean that it's of God. Paul cast out a spirit of the woman. The woman told the truth, but by what means? She used a spirit of divination or a spirit of familiarity. Again, a familiar spirit is familiar with your life. So, psychics can tell the truth to a certain extent because of familiarity, but ... the kingdom that they represent is not the kingdom of God.
From God's point of view, avoiding what God says to avoid is for your spiritual good. Going against God's Word allows one to be susceptible to bondage and oppression. A single visit or call for psychic consultation opens the door to the world of the occult and an abomination unto the Lord. Who are you listening to?
Any participation with the occult can be forgiven through Jesus Christ. Honest confession and repentance to God alone is necessary for forgiveness.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
